John Robinson Imrie was born in Wormit on Tay in 1914, attending secondary school at Harris Academy. He resided at Hawkhill Place while he studied medicine at University College Dundee, which his brother had also attended and qualified from. Graduating in 1937, he worked as an S.H.O. (Senior House Officer) at Harrogate Hospital, moving on to work as a ships surgeon. Returning from this post, he worked at Torbay Hospital before joining the R.A.M.C. (Royal Army Medial Corps).
